The Ministry of Welfare of the Republic of Latvia for the ninth year this summer organized “Summer School” for social workers and this year participants learned about the phenomenon of trafficking in human beings. For three days in August, social workers learned about forms of human trafficking, social work with victims, vulnerability of the victims, migration and asylum aspects and other relevant topics from the experts from two non-governmental organizations “Shelter “Safe House”” and “Center MARTA” who have long experience in work with survivors of trafficking. Summer schools for social workers are a great tool to extend their expertise and this year it was a great opportunity for specialists in the field of human trafficking to transfer valuable knowledge that would not only improve social work with survivors, but also promote recognition and prevention of the phenomenon in our society all over the country.
Following the trends of human trafficking in Latvia, experts from both organizations highlighted aspects of migration and asylum seeking and how these aspects not only correlate with the phenomenon of trafficking but aslo impact the needs of survivors.
