In 2018, the Law on Newly Arrived Immigrants entered into effect. This policy deals with creating more opportunities for newly arrived immigrants to quickly find work or begin an educational programme. Every step of the reception process must focus on finding a job. The policy area also includes compensation to municipalities for refugee reception and the reception of unaccompanied refugee minors. The first half of 2022 shows that 28,364 work permits were granted to immigrants along with nearly 11,873 seeking studies. This depicts a 91% transition for immigrants into the labour market.
Immigrants in Sweden enjoy equal access to rights in the labour market and to the country’s social safety net. However, for the first 2 years in the country, the work permit is only valid in connection with a specific employer and occupation. In terms of education and work-related training, immigrants are more likely to have access in Sweden than in most other countries. Legal residents can invest in their education and skills through equal access to both general support and additional, targeted support. According to studies, these labour market mobility policies can help working immigrants to improve their language and professional skills, career prospects and public acceptance.
